Standards-based grading (SBG) reports student progress on specific learning standards rather than as an average of all completed work. Instead of a single 'Math: B+', the report card shows mastery levels per standard: 'CCSS.MATH.5.NF.B.4 (multiply fractions): Proficient.' SBG separates academic mastery from behaviors like late work and participation, which are reported separately.
