Norman Webb's framework classifying tasks by cognitive demand: Recall (1), Skill/Concept (2), Strategic Thinking (3), Extended Thinking (4).
Depth of Knowledge (DOK) is a framework developed by Norman Webb in 1997 to classify cognitive demand. Unlike Bloom's, DOK focuses on the complexity of the task rather than the difficulty. DOK 1 is Recall (facts, definitions). DOK 2 is Skill or Concept (apply a procedure). DOK 3 is Strategic Thinking (justify, hypothesize). DOK 4 is Extended Thinking (multi-step investigation over time).
Most state assessments target DOK 2-3, but most classroom worksheets sit at DOK 1. This gap is one of the largest contributors to underperformance on state tests despite teachers covering all the content.
Worksheet Generator can target a specific DOK level. Ask for 'DOK 2' or 'DOK 3 questions' in the prompt and the generator will write items at the requested cognitive complexity, not just at higher difficulty.
